What Is 3-Ply Yarn, and How Does It Contribute to Carpet Quality?

The term “3-ply yarn” often appears in mosque and hotel carpet specifications. It may sound like a manufacturing detail, but the pile you see and feel with every step is shaped by the yarn’s construction. At Kalida, we express this in a simple principle: quality begins with the yarn.

What is 3-ply yarn?

3-ply yarn is made by twisting three separate strands together. The plies combine to form a full, balanced yarn. We use this construction for the pile of Kalida mosque and hotel carpets, combining carefully selected wools with a choice of weave densities and surface treatments to bring durability, appearance and comfort together.

From yarn to carpet

The value of 3-ply yarn depends on the manufacturing process around it. At our fully integrated facility in Demirci, Manisa, we carry out yarn production, dyeing, weaving, shearing and finishing in-house. This allows the same quality approach to guide the yarn from dyeing through to the final surface.

Selecting the wool

The wool is the starting point for the yarn’s character. Our mosque carpets are available in 100% pure wool or 80% wool / 20% polyamide, with Turkish, British and New Zealand wool options. Hotel carpets are offered in 100% wool or 80% British wool / 20% polyamide. We use reactive dyes sourced from Switzerland and Germany.

A strong construction

Combined with careful weaving, 3-ply yarn forms the basis of carpets suited to heavy use. Our woven carpets have a cut-pile construction produced by Wilton face-to-face weaving. Different weave densities, weights and thicknesses allow the carpet to be specified for its intended space. Our carpets’ durability is rated 4–5 under IWS TM 247 testing.

A refined surface

Texture and appearance receive attention at every stage, from weaving to finishing. Treatments such as shearing and steaming help produce an even, balanced pile surface, allowing the pattern and colour to read clearly and consistently.

Comfort underfoot

Wool’s natural texture and the 3-ply yarn construction give the carpet a soft, comfortable feel. This matters in mosques, where worshippers spend extended periods in contact with the carpet, and in hotels, where guest comfort is a priority.

Comparing quotations

Look beyond pattern and colour to the yarn’s construction and material. Request written details of the number of plies, wool type, blend percentages, weave density and pile weight so quotations can be compared on the same basis. Preserving appearance over time also depends on regular, appropriate care.

3-ply yarn is one part of carpet quality, working together with wool selection, dyeing, weaving and surface treatments. This is the foundation of Kalida’s approach to combining durability, appearance and comfort in mosque and hotel carpets.
