How to Measure a Mosque for Carpet: An Area Calculation Guide

One of the most frustrating problems in mosque carpet projects is a delivery that does not fit: there is either too little carpet or too much. The cause is often a detail missed during measuring. An accurate area calculation is a technical task that needs careful attention before production.

Architectural drawings or on-site measurements?

Up-to-date drawings are a useful starting point, but small changes made during construction may not appear on them, including column dimensions, recess depths and threshold positions. Even a reliable plan should be checked with final measurements on site.

Measure irregular areas separately

Columns, mihrab recesses, entrance steps and marble borders cannot be captured by a single rectangular measurement. Measure these areas individually and either deduct them from the total or plan them as separate pieces. Otherwise, the ordered quantity may differ from the actual requirement.

Separate calculations beneath domes and in galleries

A circular or polygonal floor beneath a dome requires a different approach from a rectangular area and will often need a specific cutting allowance. Prayer galleries, including women’s sections and upper floors, should be measured separately. Their access and cutting conditions may differ, so the same waste allowance as the main hall should not be assumed.

Exclude ablution and other wet areas

Only include dry prayer areas that will actually receive carpet. Exclude ablution facilities, toilets and entrance areas with a different floor finish, and mark the boundaries clearly.

Use appropriate measuring tools

A laser measure, a team of at least two people and photographs of each corner help reduce errors. One diagonal measurement is not enough in a large hall. Measuring along at least two axes and at several points can reveal small deviations not shown on the plan.

Allow for cutting and pattern repeats

The manufacturer considers cutting waste and pattern matching in addition to the net floor area. With prayer row designs in particular, edge pieces may need to be trimmed to keep the pattern continuous. Ask the supplier to state the proposed allowance in writing before ordering.

Common measuring mistakes

Frequent errors include measuring along one axis and assuming symmetry, overlooking columns and recesses, applying the main hall’s waste allowance to a gallery, and including wet areas. Many can be avoided by inviting the manufacturer’s measuring team to site or supplying a detailed drawing and photographs.

Area calculation is as technical as the design itself. A day or two of additional care at this stage can prevent weeks of delay after production.
