Wilton Weaving and AutoTuft: How We Make Our Carpets

Kalida manufactures mosque, hotel and AutoTuft carpets at its fully integrated facility in Demirci, Manisa. Yarn production, dyeing, weaving, shearing and finishing are carried out in-house. Here, we explain our two manufacturing methods, Wilton weaving and AutoTuft, alongside their pattern and sizing options.

Wilton face-to-face weaving

Our woven carpets use the Wilton face-to-face technique. Two carpets are woven simultaneously with their faces towards each other. The pile yarns connecting the two backing fabrics are cut through the centre to create two separate carpets, each with a cut-pile surface woven into its foundation.

3-ply pile yarn and material options

Our Wilton carpets use 3-ply pile yarn, made by twisting three separate strands together. Mosque carpets are offered in 100% pure wool or 80% wool / 20% polyamide, with Turkish, British and New Zealand wool options. Hotel carpets are available in 100% wool or 80% British wool / 20% polyamide. Reactive dyes sourced from Switzerland and Germany are used in dyeing.

Weave density, weight and thickness

We manufacture woven carpets in different wools, weave densities, weights and thicknesses. Mosque carpet point density ranges from 499,200 to 729,600 points/m², depending on the quality selected. Hotel carpets range from 7 × 7 to 7 × 12 per inch, with pile weights of 1,030–1,988 g/m², a pile height of 7 mm and total thickness of 9 mm. Shearing and steam treatment complete the surface.

Patterns and dimensions

Our woven carpets are manufactured at a width of 4.00 m. For mosque carpets, this accommodates three prayer rows of 1.33 m each; patterns, colours and row layouts are planned around the mosque’s measurements and floor plan. For hotels, patterns and colours reflect the use of lobbies, corridors, rooms and halls. Our hotel carpets have a latex vinyl-acrylic copolymer backing, receive Eulan moth protection treatment and can be installed by double glue-down or stretch fitting.

AutoTuft production

AutoTuft offers solutions for bespoke patterns and dimensions. In this method, pile yarns are inserted into a backing fabric to form the design. It allows designs to be shaped around spaces that require non-standard dimensions or a distinctive pattern.

Choosing the method for your project

We consider the intended use, pattern, dimensions and design requirements together. For bespoke patterns and colours, the minimum order is 200 m² for mosque carpets and 500 m² for hotel carpets; production takes 6–8 weeks. In Turkey, our own teams provide measuring and professional installation. For international projects, we coordinate with local teams.

Wilton weaving forms the basis of Kalida’s mosque and hotel carpets, while AutoTuft provides options for bespoke patterns and dimensions. Share your requirements, measurements and design ideas so we can identify the most suitable method and product options together.
