For the carpet project at Selimiye Mosque in Edirne, we recreated historic patterns using 100% Turkish wool and a weave density of 729,600 points per square metre. Taking the patterns of a historic carpet in the Museum of Turkish and Islamic Arts as our exact reference, we created a bespoke installation that complements the mosque’s architecture.
From manufacturing to on-site carpet fitting, Kalida combined fidelity to the historic reference with carefully selected materials and precision weaving.
729,600 Points per Square Metre: Attention to Pattern Detail
A defining feature of the carpet manufactured for Selimiye Mosque is its weave density of 729,600 points/m². This means there are 729,600 woven points in each square metre of carpet.
The dense weave allows fine lines, motif transitions and details to be expressed on the surface. For Selimiye, this specification played an important role in reproducing the original pattern.
From Historic Carpet to Bespoke Production
The design was based on a historic carpet preserved in the Museum of Turkish and Islamic Arts. Using its patterns as an exact reference, we rewove them in the colour arrangements chosen for different parts of the mosque.
In doing so, we brought the historic carpet’s motifs into Selimiye Mosque’s present-day prayer spaces.
100% Turkish Wool
We used 100% locally sourced Turkish wool for the project. Combining its natural texture with a density of 729,600 points/m², we created a mosque carpet in which material and pattern complement each other.
Every manufacturing stage, from yarn production and dyeing to weaving, shearing and finishing, took place at our fully integrated facilities in Demirci, Manisa.
Colour on the Raised Platform, Tonal Design Elsewhere
We used a multicoloured version of the pattern on the raised platform. In the remaining areas, we chose a tone-on-tone design using different shades of the same colour.
This arrangement highlights the patterns on the raised platform while creating a calmer, more unified floor across the other prayer areas.
From Manufacturing to Professional Carpet Fitting
Once manufacturing was complete, we fitted the carpets on site according to the agreed pattern and colour layout. We paid close attention to pattern continuity, joins and the fit within the space.
The Selimiye Mosque carpet project brought historic design, manufacturing and on-site installation together in a complete, coordinated process.
